For sale is a beautiful large antique map of the eastern hemisphere from the year 1761. This more than 260 year old French map clearly shows that Australia was still largely undiscovered. This also applies to the South Pole. It is a hand-colored copper engraving, with a very decorative border with floral motif. Printed on heavy paper and very nice to frame.
The title of the map is 'Climates d'Heures et de Mois'. The French text in the side panels explains what is meant by this: "A climate zone is a piece of land between two circles parallel to the equator. The width of which is such that the length of the artificial day in one is half an hour longer than in the other". So this map is about the length of the day, not about the current meaning of the word climate.
